This Newbie diary covers July 1999 when I attempted to become a Kings Cross Steeler. I said it would continue until "either (a) I give up with the diary or (b) the training finishes me off ;-)" - it was the latter.

Several parts of my body continue to ache and rather than try last weeks "natural" healing process we decide to give nature a helping hand and purchase a large quantity of icy-gel muscle relief. Heaven! I know my muscles still ache, but it takes the edge off it and means that I can actually go to sleep without thinking "god my legs ache..." All I need now is for someone to rub it in *grin*

Sunday 25th July 1999
Okay my second training session this week and I was better prepared or so I thought ;-) Deciding to pace myself more I stayed out of a few (okay maybe a lot) of some of the exercises but still managed to pull both hamstrings which wasn't pleasant. Anyway my sprinting was pretty good but anything else was a disaster, and I looked like a fish out of water during some things - "what exactly is that?" as twenty rugby players make strange movements that I have no hope of following. Really I suppose I need to decide if I'm going about things the right way - everyone else came along expecting to play rugby, me (in my naivety) expected something else, cheers Alex!

Thursday 22nd July 1999
My legs have nearly recovered

Wednesday 21st July 1999
I've regained the full use of my arms

Tuesday 20th July 1999
I feel and ache worse that on Monday

Monday 19th July 1999
I'm sore all over... ouch!

Sunday 18th July 1999
I did better this week, I actually made it to London although I was a bit late. How am I going to cope without my Sunday morning lie-in's (remember I have to get to East London from Brighton). The training wasn't too bad... if you consider that I felt like I was having a heart attack, I was made to catch rugby balls thrown at me, I was tackled and saw someone cut themselves (squeamish me?). I think the heat had something to do with it, but I sat out of the last half hour to try and catch my breath. Alex is still trying to convince me that I won't get injured if I join the team... and everyone else goes "Rugby players expect to get injured" - eek! Apparently my face was a picture when they were saying that. Oh and I meet two 'new' Steelers (well new to me) who happen to be cute *and* married.... shocker ;-)

Sunday 11th July 1999
Okay so my first training session didn't go well. Why not? Well I was in Brighton for a starter. Very apologetic phone call to Alex whilst I resolve to have no social life next Saturday evening so I can get up in time..

Saturday 3rd July 1999
Meet waaaaayyyy too many people at Mardi Gras and remember virtually no names (as usual). What can I say? They are a really nice bunch of guys and it was really nice to go round with a group of people that you hadn't spent the last six months in the back pockets of. The photographs will no doubt come back to haunt me but what the hell? Shame all the one's I fancy seem to be married ;-)
